NFL Preview: Wild Card Weekend

Drew Brees should lead the Saints to an easy win

Jeremy is back from the holidays, and so am I. Although I’m still recovering from the disastrous end to the season for the San Diego Chargers, who managed to miss the playoffs despite ranking first in total offense and total defense, I’m still thrilled to watch all of the action this weekend. Here’s a rundown of the games going on during Saturday and Sunday.

The Saints begin their Super Bowl defense in Seattle in what is basically the equivalent of a first round bye. The Seahawks enter the postseason as arguably the worst team to qualify for the playoffs in the history of sports (they were outscored by almost 100 points this year), but they are at home where they had a 5-3 record this season. For what it’s worth, I remember being extremely upset when the St. Louis Cardinals qualified for the playoffs with just 83 wins in the 2006 MLB season (a record that was worse than the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East that season), but the Cardinals showed me and won the World Series that year. I fully expect the Saints to destroy Seattle though, with Drew Brees’ boys coming into the playoffs winning 7 of their last 9 and have been surprisingly underrated this year.

In the late game Saturday, we’ll have a rematch of last years AFC Championship with the Jets facing the Colts. The Colts had a down year by their standards, but they still won the division with a 10-6 record despite a plethora of injuries. The Jets had more ups than downs this year, but most of the downs came at the end of the season. The Colts are also one team that has taken on Rex Ryan’s defense with ease–they are 5-1 against Sexy Rexy’s defense’s over the years.  Nevertheless, the Jets have a serious shot at this game but they’ll need a good performance from Mark Sanchez, whose 54.8 completion percentage was one of the worst in the AFC.

On Sunday, we’ll have some more intriguing matchups, starting in Kansas City. The Chiefs are undoubtedly this years surprise playoff team, and their success is not a fluke. Their offense is incredibly well-balanced, with the Matt Cassel-Dwayne Bowe connection one of the best in the league, and the running back committee of Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones are one of the most explosive duos in the league (especially Charles, who is flat out amazing). They are also an amazing 7-1 at home, with the lone loss coming one week against the Raiders. The Ravens are still the favourite in this one, thanks to an excellent defense and a career year from Quarterback Joe Flacco. Flacco played excellent in his first two trips to the playoffs, and will be looking to build on that at Arrowhead.

The last game of Wild Card weekend should definitely be a ratings winner. Aaron Rodgers leads the Packers into Philadelphia to face Michael Vick’s Eagles. Vick appears to be healthy enough to play effectively in this one, but he didn’t exactly finish the season with the same outstanding highlight reel plays he was making at the beginning and middle of the season. The Packers have been known for their high powered offense since Aaron Rodgers took over for Brett Favre, but their defense gave up just 15 points a game this year. Interestingly enough, the Packers were brutal on the road this year, finishing at 3-5, while the Eagles were mediocre at home, with just a .500 record. If there’s one game I really have no clue as to who’ll win this weekend, it’s this one.

  1. The Colts are going to be tough to beat at home.

  2. Glad to have you back, my man. I was hoping my Rams would get in at 8-8 and roll to the Super Bowl the way Arizona did a couple years ago, but I guess it wasn’t to be. Maybe they can play the Chargers in what we’ll call the real championship.

  3. I thought the Rams were going to get in. Either way, I think that division is theres in the next few years. They just need to get Bradford some weapons and he’s the next Peyton Manning.
