Kings rally late, hold off Raps

Evans led a late rally to lead the Kings over the Raptors

Oh come on! The one game on their four-game West swing the Raps have a shot at winning, and they go and toss away a 17-point lead. Toronto jumped on the Kings early last night in Sacramento, then succumbed to a fourth-quarter rally to fall 111-108.

The Raptors led 33-16 after a quarter, by as many as 16 in the third and carried an 86-78 lead to the fourth, but a 33-22 Kings run over the final 12 minutes was enough to do Toronto in. Andrea Bargnani had 28 points but chipped in a single rebound, giving him nine in three games on the season and putting to rest any question of whether he’ll be improved on the boards in his fifth NBA season. If nine rebounds in three games for a starting center isn’t a telling enough stat, then compare it to this — Reggie Evans grabbed 10 boards in the first quarter alone last night. He had 19 in the game, giving him 49 in the season’s first three.

DeMar DeRozan had a nice offensive night, scoring 24 on 7-of-12 shooting and scrapping his way to 14 free throw attempts (of which he made 10). Linas Kleiza had 18 points and Jose Calderon had his best game of the young season, scoring 13 and adding five assists in 25 minutes off the bench.

Tyreke Evans had 23 points, seven boards and five assists for the Kings, who used an 11-1 run to grab an eight-point lead with under two minutes to go before a Toronto push cut it to one with 13 seconds remaining. After a DeRozan dunk, Beno Udrih hit a couple free throws and the Raptors missed a couple cheapies to put it to bed. Udrih had 17 points for Sacramento and rookie DeMarcus Cousins shook some early foul trouble to finish with 16 in just 17 minutes.

The loss drops Toronto to 1-2, with daunting dates left against the Jazz (Wednesday), Lakers (Friday) and Blazers (Saturday) on the trip. So yeah, this is shaping up like every other Western Conference swing the Raptors have had over the past 16 years.
