2010-11 Raptors Preview: Reggie Evans

With the preseason underway, we’re profiling each player on the Raptors roster in anticipation of the Oct. 27 opener against New York. Here’s a look at today’s subject, big man Reggie Evans:

Evans brings the type of physical presence we're not too used to in Toronto

There are a few things we’ve learned about Reggie Evans in his NBA career thus far. For one, he’s not afraid to clutch, grab and slap. He also wears tremendous suits. His Twitter account is wildly amusing, even though I’m pretty sure he doesn’t even realize it. Most importantly, though, is that he plays hard and rebounds the hell out of the ball, and has milked that hustle into a 10-year career as a solid role player.

Evans came over from Philadelphia in a deal for free agent bust Jason Kapono, whose four-year, $26 million contract naturally brought a big one in return, as Evans had two years and nearly $10 million remaining on his. It was to be the start of a new era in Toronto — one where flaky outside shooters were to be replaced by tough big men that weren’t afraid to step on a few throats and squeeze a couple testicles in the paint. Then came a little ankle injury in the first preseason game, and off to the sidelines went Evans for the first 51 games of the regular season, where we could sit and admire his extensive wardrobe while watching his teammates get punished under the basket.

Evans’ return was nothing too special — he played 28 games, the team went 11-17, and he averaged just 3.4 points and 3.8 boards in just 11.1 minutes. He did, however, bring a type of energy to the floor that the Raptors really haven’t seen much of since the Jerome Williams days, and as a result developed the type of cult following JYD had when he was in town.

Regardless of the amount of floor time he gets, you know what to expect from Evans. Minutes, however, may be hard to come by in 2010-11 — Amir Johnson will likely assume the starting power forward position, with rookie Ed Davis picking up time in relief of both Johnson and Andrea Bargnani. Having said that, Evans still shouldn’t be written off at this point — Johnson, for one, hasn’t proven capable of consistently staying on the floor thus far due to foul trouble, and Davis is still recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery after a meniscus injury in a pickup game last month. Fellow big man Joey Dorsey, a hustler from the same mold as Evans, figures to be in the mix for minutes as well.

2009-10: 28 games (one start), 49.3% from the field and 45.0% from the line, 3.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 0.50 steals in 11.1 minutes per game.

What to expect: His minutes will likely vary over the course of the season, which is something he’s adapted to over his career. As mentioned, you know what to expect — hustle, rebounds and physical play (both appropriate and non-appropriate).

Check out the other Raptors we’ve previewed: Andrea Bargnani, Jose Calderon, DeMar DeRozan, Jarrett Jack and Sonny Weems.
