A.J. update: Not good enough to start in playoffs

Sorry big fella

Here’s a shock, if I’ve ever seen one: Yankees manager Joe Girardi announced his rotation this afternoon for the ALDS against Minnesota, and its void of an $82 million washout named Allan James Burnett. Okay, okay…so it’s not much of a surprise, but still sweet to hear.

Burnett, who was handed his 15th loss in a shelling at Rogers Centre last Monday, took a no-decision in his final start Saturday against Boston, a 7-6 New York loss in 10 innings. Facing a Red Sox lineup loaded with such superstars as Eric Patterson, Lars Anderson, Kevin Cash, Ryan Kalish and Jason Reddick, Burnett lasted six innings and gave up four runs, though just two were earned. For the year, he went 10-15 with a 5.26 ERA.

With A.J. out of the mix, Girardi is opting to go with Cy Young candidate CC Sabathia in tomorrow night’s opener at Target Field, with Little Andrew Pettitte and Phil Hughes set for the following two games. Should it get to Game 4, Sabathia is the likely option on short rest. Minnesota, by the way, is going with lefty Francisco Liriano in tomorrow’s series opener.
