A.J. (still) sucks

Cool tattoos, man

Maybe I’m too hard on A.J. Burnett. Seems everyday I’m on him, whether it be for his poor pitching, outrageous contract, stupid tattoos or constant hissy fits. Maybe he’s just not that good of a pitcher. Maybe he’s just a normal guy that gets paid $82 million to suck at baseball.

Burnett made his third start tonight at Rogers Centre since his exit after the 2008 season and was shelled, failing to get out of the third inning and leaving down 6-0 with men on first and third and one out. When all was said an done, Burnett’s line was finer than I ever could’ve imagined: Two-and-a-third innings, seven hits, seven earned runs, a walk and two homers allowed — a solo shot to John Buck in the second and a three-run blast to Vernon Wells in the third. In four starts against the Jays this year, Burnett is 0-3 with a 9.61 ERA over 19 2/3 innings, and for the season he’s a sparkling 10-15 with 5.33 ERA in 32 starts.

The game, by the way, ended 7-5 in favour of the Jays, with the Yankees tacking on five straight after the third to make it interesting. Marc Rzepczynski struck out nine while shutting New York out through the first four innings, but a Curtis Granderson two-run shot and a boatload of pitches the next inning was enough to finish him after five. Rzepczynski grabbed the win for the second straight start, running his record to 3-4.

Mark Teixeira hit a three-run homer off Brian Tallet in the sixth to cut it to two, but Josh Roenicke, Jesse Carlson and Scotty Downs got it to the ninth for Kevin Gregg, who miraculously retired Derek Jeter, Nick Swisher and Teixeira in order to grab his 36th save.

The win is the Jays’ sixth in seven games on the homestand, and their fifth in seven at Rogers Centre against the Yankees this season. Kyle Drabek (0-2, 4.91) makes his third start tomorrow night, with some fatty named CC Sabathia (20-7, 3.26) in the opposite corner.

  1. Via Jack Curry of Yes Network: AJ in his last 26 starts is 6-15 with a 6.30 era.

  2. Looks like he’ll be coming out of the pen in the postseason

  3. One of the worst seasons by a Yankee starting pitcher in history. As for the playoffs, they’d be dumb to even put him on the roster. They will though, and I’m glad…

  4. […] who was handed his 15th loss in a shelling at Rogers Centre last Monday, took a no-decision in his final start Saturday against Boston, a 7-6 New York loss in 10 innings. […]

  5. […] he’s putting the ball in the hands of A.J. Burnett. Yes folks, that’s A.J. Burnett, of A.J. sucks fame. The A.J. Burnett that lost 15 games in 2010 and hasn’t pitched in 15 games. Can’t wait […]
