Put a fork in the Jays

A pie in the face...how clever?

A lot has happened in Jayland on my brief blogging hiatus, and not much of it good: A four-game sweep at the hands of the powerhouse Cleveland Indians, a DL trip for Shaun Marcum and two losses in three games at Yankee Stadium, including a 7-6 extra-inning flop this afternoon. Oh yeah, and Adam Lind and Aaron Hill are both still horrible.

A day after scoring 11 runs in the third inning en route to an 11-3 win, New York scored three late to take a 6-5 lead to the ninth, had Mariano Rivera blow the save, then won on a Marcus Thames walk-off single off David Purcey in the 10th. I’m real glad Cito Gaston saved Purcey’s first important appearance for an extra inning game at Yankee Stadium — way to be prepared, old fella.

Toronto scored three in the fifth on a homer by DeWayne Wise, who also drove home the tying run with a single off Rivera with two down in the ninth. Lyle Overbay hit a solo homer in the third and Lind padded his .205 average with a solo blast of his own in the sixth. Jose Bautista, who was named alongside Vernon Wells and John Buck to the AL All-Star team earlier in the day, had a team-high three hits, all singles.

After a string of five straight strong starts, Brandon Morrow had his second straight shaking outing for the Jays — he gave up nine hits and five runs over six, leaving a tie that Shawn Camp promptly coughed up in the seventh on a Mark Teixeira RBI double.

The loss drops the mighty Jays to 41-42 — under .500 for the first time since April 6, when they sat 0-1. Next up, a much-anticipated day off, followed by back-to-back three-gamers against Minnesota and Boston at home. Jesse Litsch (0-3, 6.98) and Kevin Slowey (8-5, 4.57) match up in the opener.

  1. On the bright side, three Jays were selected to the all star game. I figured only Wells would have made it, and I didn’t realize Buck was having a career year.

  2. I’m glad you sid it and not me… the rotations fucked and there starting to lose ground. as for the all starts well deserved… we need a winner in this town tho

  3. Man, I’m an idiot for getting my hopes up. As if I learned nothing from last season…

  4. Jays were never meant to compete this year. Regardless, you can not deny the fact that they are one fun team to watch.
