Leafs stake their claims on last place

Even the Hurricanes need some love, sometimes

Two weeks ago, Jonas Gustavsson was the man. Now, in the midst of a five-game skid following an ugly shootout loss to Carolina last night, the Leafs’ Swedish savior is about as useful as Vesa Toskala. The Monster & co. blew a 3-0 lead to the Hurricanes last night and lost 6-5, dropping them to a league-worst 3-11-6.

Gustavsson gave up three third period goals, including one to Erik Cole with two seconds left to send it to overtime. After a scoreless five minutes, Carolina put the shootout away with goals by Tuomo Ruutu and Jussi Jokinen and a pair of stops by Manny Legace on Phil Kessel and sniper Lee Stempniak. Ruoto added four assists in the game and defenceman Tim Gleason had two goals for the Hurricanes.

By the way, that prediction of mine a couple weeks ago about the Leafs being a seventh-to-10th place team in the Eastern Conference? Apparently I was waaaaaay off. I should’ve known better — this is Toronto, after all. Anyway, the Leafs are back in action Saturday at the ACC, where they’ll look to shock the world against the East-leading Capitals.

  1. why be so negative. the idea is to tank this year and get the #1 overall pick. then claim Boston violated a contract, or condition in it to get the pick back???

  2. Yeah, they could use that pick…or those picks, however many they gave away.
