Yeah, Cliff Lee can pitch

Lee and Carlos Ruiz, putting it to bed

I believe in you, Cliff Lee. It took some time — I still didn’t trust you after you went 22-3 last year — but I’m ready to proclaim you a legit number one starter. My boy Sully Sullivan may not be, but I am. Lee went to work at Yankee Stadium tonight, pitching another gem to lead the Phillies to an easy 6-1 win the opener of the World Series.

Philly took some heat for not sealing the deal for Roy Halladay in July, instead opting for Lee at a cheaper price. It proved to be the right decision — Lee went 7-4 in 12 regular season starts after the deal and improved to 3-0 in four postseason starts with tonight’s effort, lowering his ERA to 0.81 in the process. He’s been a better pitcher than Halladay the past two years, and as much as it pains me to say, there’s no reason to believe he won’t be better the next five years. Credit to the Phillies for making the right decision (and for letting us keep our precious Doc).

Anyway, Lee gave up six hits and an unearned ninth inning run tonight, out-dueling CC Sabathia, who gave up a pair of solo homers to Chase Utley in seven innings. The Phillies put it away with two runs off “future star” Phil Hughes in the eighth and another couple off Brian Bruney in the ninth. Lee also managed to cool off Alex Rodriguez, who went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Is his playoff magic finished? You bet!

The win sets Philly on the road to winning in seven, just as I predicted Wednesday. But like an architect switching career paths to city planning, why don’t I set my aspirations higher? How about the Phillies in five? Well, I won’t get too far ahead of myself yet.

Game 2 goes Thursday night in New York, with A.J. Burnett (0-0, 4.42 in three postseason starts) facing Pedro Martinez (seven shutout innings in his only NLCS start, a no-decision).
