Raps set lineup for opener, Weems not dressing

Weems is out Wednesday

We’ll start finding out whether or not the NBA preseason means anything Wednesday night when the Raptors open at home against LeBron & company. Here’s one indication that it may not, at least according to Jay Triano: Sonny Weems is inactive for the opener, despite playing well in his exhibition audition.

The Raptors announced their 12-man roster for Wednesday today: Chris Bosh, Jose Calderon, Hedo Turkoglu, Andrea Bargnani, DeMar DeRozan, Antoine Wright, Jarrett Jack, Marco Belinelli, Marcus Banks, Amir Johnson, Rasho Nesterovic and Patrick O’Bryant will dress, with Weems, Reggie Evans (who’s still sidelined with a knee injury) and Quincy Douby in suits.

It’s a bit disappointing to see Weems sit after his performance in the preseason (8.5 points in 20.3 minutes per game, shooting .517 from the field). Sure, Triano has a plethora of swingmen at his disposal, but I have to imagine at this point Weems is in better game shape than Wright, who didn’t suit up in his first exhibition game until the finale last Friday. I’d also argue he’s more useful than Banks or O’Bryant, even though Triano obviously wants depth at the point and in the middle.

Still, Weems had to have turned some heads within the organization with his performance this past month. Hopefully he’ll keep bringing it in practice and see some game time soon enough.

(UPDATE: Apparently Weems hurt his left foot while diving for a ball Sunday at practice, according to the Toronto Sun. Not sure if that’s what’s keeping him out Wednesday or if he’d still be inactive even if healthy.)
