Hard luck, even for a Nats fan

Not a bad place to see 19 straight losses

Not a bad place to see 19 straight losses

Have you ever felt like you’re bad luck to your favourite team? I have, but I’ve never felt quite like how Stephen Krupin must feel. Krupin, who splits Washington Nationals season tickets with a few friends, went to 19 games in 2009. The Nats record in those games? A sparkling 0-19. Even with Washington’s league-worst record taken into account, the mathematical chance of that happening was 1/134, 204.

Krupin contends that other than two games against the Red Sox, he chose games that accomodated his schedule, so it’s not as though he only came out when the Nats were facing high-profile opponents. Interestingly, he had originally planned to go to a game against the Mets in the week’s final season, but decided to go to a U2 concert instead. As you’d expect (in part because they were facing the Mets), Washington won.

The Nationals, by the way, were 33-48 at home in 2009, meaning they were 33-29 in games Krupin didn’t attend.
