And so it begins…

No time to recover from last night’s AL Central Tiebreaker — the MLB Playoffs get underway this afternoon, with the Phillies and Rockies kicking off a triple-header at 2:30.

With all the hype surrounding the Twins, it’s easy to forget the Rockies enter October (and by that, I mean the playoffs) equally hot, having gone 20-11 since Sept. 1 and 72-38 since sitting a miserable 20-32 on Jun. 3. Sound familiar? Yeah, because they had a similar run in 2007 to reach the playoffs, where they swept the Phillies in the first round and the D-Backs in the NLCS before losing to Boston in the World Series. So, a repeat of that series with Philadelphia in 2007? It’s possible, given their pitching staff is stronger (though they’ll be without 16-game winner Jorge de la Rosa) and their offense scored the second-most runs in the National League. The league’s top offense, however, was that of the Phillies, behind the always-dangerous duo of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. I’d love to see this one go five. Ubaldo Jimenez (15-12, 3.47) and Cliff Lee (14-13, 3.22) get the ball in the opener.

Also on tap today are the Yankees-Twins and Red Sox-Angels. Now, the baseball fan in me would love to see a New York-Boston ALCS, though that means one of the two would be in the World Series and have a shot at winning. I’ll play it safe and just hope they both lose in the first round.

Anyway, enough talk — game on!
