Bart Andrus and the Argos can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Toronto snapped a five-game losing streak and won at home for the first time since last Aug. 1, beating Hamilton 25-22 in overtime on Justin Medlock’s game-winning 28-yard field goal Friday.

“We all stood up ceremoniously and took not a monkey, but a gorilla off our backs,” Andrus said following the game. “It was nice. The guys have perservered. It was a good team win.”

The Argos didn’t make it easy on themselves — Jamal Robertson’s second rushing touchdown of the game gave them a 19-12 lead with just over three minutes to play, but Toronto’s defense allowed Kevin Glenn to scramble 18 yards on third down to tie things with 25 seconds to go. The Argos defense had coughed up fourth quarter leads in the three previous home games — losses to Winnipeg, B.C. and Calgary.

“He made a play,” linebacker Willie Pile said of Glenn’s late score. “Glenn has been a top player in this league for a long time, but we were fortunate to get a chance to come back and shut them down in overtime.”

After the teams traded 28-yard field goals in the extra frame, Toronto’s Claude Harriott sacked Glenn on second down and forced Hamilton to attempt a 49-yarder. Nick Setta’s attempt sailed wide left by inches, giving the Argos a chance to win on Medlock’s attempt. Andrus took no chances, sending the kicker out on first down after a pair of Jamal Robertson rushes left Toronto on the Ti-Cats’ 28-yard line.

Robertson had his best game since the season opener in Hamilton, carrying the ball 18 times for 117 yards. He scored the Argos’ first touchdown in the second quarter, going 34 yards on Toronto’s first play following a botched fake punt attempt by the Ti-Cats.

“This was definitely a much-needed win,” Robertson said afterward. “We needed to get that momentum turned around and break that losing streak.”

Cody Pickett completed 20-of-31 passes for 254 yards and no interceptions in arguably the strongest performance of his young CFL career. Pickett looked downfield more often than in past games, connecting with Chad Lucas five times for 87 yards and with Jeremy Carter, who made his Argo debut after signing early-last week, four times for 94 yards. Pickett found Carter for consecutive gains of 29 and 23 yards on Toronto’s go-ahead scoring drive late in the fourth quarter.

The Argos’ defense benefitted from the return of defensive end Jonathan Brown, who missed the first nine games of the season with a back injury. Brown had a sack in his return.

“To get a sack was a good thing but the win was even bigger,” Brown said after the game. “The hope the teams gets from it could be a season changer. Hopefully we can build on this. The sky is the limit with this team.”
