Z-Man gets the last laugh

Brandon League took his turn blowing today's game

Brandon League took his turn blowing today's game

Last September, a roided-up Gregg Zaun hit a walk-off grand slam at Rogers Centre against Tampa Bay. Today, just less than a year later, he delivered another bomb. This time, however, he’s a Ray, and was granted baseball’s biggest favour — a chance to hit against Toronto’s bullpen late in a tie game. Brandon League did the honours this afternoon, serving up a pinch-hit grand slam to the Z-Man in the eighth, busting open a 1-1 game that the Rays would eventually win 5-2.

This is getting ugly. Pretty, pretty ugly. I will say this in defence of the ‘pen, though — is it possible for our offense to put a run on the board in a tie game? The Jays’ bats wasted a bases-loaded, nobody out opportunity in the third against Matt Garza and then again failed to score with two on and none out the next inning. Vernon Wells had an RBI single in the fifth and Marco Scutaro homered in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.

The loss was Toronto’s second in a row after Doc took the opener Friday night. Next up, three at Rogers Centre against the Red Sox.  Ricky Romero gets the ball Tuesday in the opener against Josh Beckett.
