Andrus calls on Pickett

K.J. is out, Cody Pickett is in

K.J. is out, Cody Pickett is in

Step aside, Kerry Joseph. Argos head coach Bart Andrus officially announced today what he’d hinted at in yesterday’s practice — Cody Pickett will be his starting quarterback Friday night against BC. Joseph, the CFL Most Outstanding Player in 2007, has been a letdown since being acquired last March from Saskatchewan. After struggling for the better part of last season, he’s leading the CFL with 10 interceptions thrown in 2009 and has the Argos sitting at 2-4. In last Friday’s 25-0 loss to Montreal, Joseph completed just seven passes for 61 yards before going down with an injury in the fourth quarter.

Pickett actually saw some time filling in for an ineffective Joseph in 2008 as well, starting two games — both losses to Calgary. He was solid in relief Friday, completing 7-of-11 attempts for 83 yards, but like Joseph, wasn’t able to get Toronto on the board. The 29-year-old Washington-product has been an Argo since 2007 and also spent time as a backup with the San Francisco 49ers.

The demotion is the latest in a line of bold moves by Andrus, but one that is necessary. If Pickett doesn’t pan out, expect Joseph to come back inspired like he did last season — in five games after being re-inserted as starter in 2008, he threw for 1,530 yards, 11 touchdowns and just three interceptions, compared to 2,644, six and 11 in 11 previous starts.

  1. Andrus is BRUTAL.

  2. He’s definitely taking a hard line, and it’s worked with some players and gone horribly wrong with others (ahem…Arland Bruce III). Either way, the results haven’t been there. As far as this decision goes, I can’t blame him — Joseph has been a nightmare thus far.
