Jays dangle Rios

Amidst all the alumni hoopla and last night’s embarassing loss to the Orioles, there was another little Jays nugget floating around: Toronto apparently dangled Alex Rios on waivers this week and a team — reportedly the White Sox — put in a claim. Granted, this isn’t huge news, since teams often place players on waivers to test their market value and are able to take them off even if a team claims them, but there’s some talk the Jays may look into making a move. And why not?

How great would it be if the Sox took Rios and the remaining five years and $66 million off our hands? With that money back in our hands, how quickly would that accelerate this rebuilding process? I say dump the bum, even if we get nothing in return. ESPN’s Buster Olney suggests 90 percent of baseball execs would agree this would be Toronto’s best bet.

The Jays have three options and need to make a decision before Tuesday: Either work out a trade involving Rios with the team that made the claim, allow the team to take him (and his contract) for free or pull him off waivers and keep him in Toronto. Let’s see what happens!
