Hill keeps mashing, Jays actually win

The mighty Aaron Hill

The mighty Aaron Hill

I could get used to Edwin Encarnacion. Well, at least if the Jays keep winning every game with him in the lineup. Toronto played their first game with their new third baseman last night in Oakland, winning 6-5, though more in part to Aaron Hill’s three-run homer than Encarnacion’s single and run scored. Meanwhile, in Cincinnati, Scotty Rolen went 0-for-4 as the Reds lost for the 11th time in 12 games.

Brett Cecil was solid again for Toronto, going seven innings and giving up four runs, all of which came in the second on a pair of two-run doubles. Lyle Overbay, the Jays’ default cleanup hitter with Rolen gone, hit a solo homer, giving him three RBIs since June 21. I was that was a joke, but it’s far from.

Back to Rolen: This deal is growing on me more and more — two live young arms and a 26-year-old third baseman that has hit for both average (.289 in 2007) and power (26 home runs in 2008) in his career, though not in the same season. By the way, why did Cincinnati — a team now 13 games under .500 and 10 games out of the playoffs — trade all that for a 34-year-old due $11 million next season in the last year of his contract? It blows my mind, but it’s fine by me.

  2. I’m with you on this. Rolen is an all around pro and will be missed in Toronto. This was a good move for the jays but, what is encarnacions contract. hopefully with this line-up we can see a more agressive offensive running game

  3. Yeah, it was a good move for both the Jays and Rolen (who gets to play on grass now), but I’m still not sure what the Reds were thinking. Encarnacion is making about $2.5 million this year…
