Jays throw another one away

Downsy, doing his best B.J. Ryan impression

Downsy, doing his best B.J. Ryan impression

If this happened two months ago when the Jays actually looked like they’d make this season interesting, I’d be mightily pissed off. Anyway, if you had something better to do on a Tuesday night than to watch a classic match-up between Toronto and AL-worst Cleveland, you missed Scotty Downs and Lyle Overbay teaming up to blow Brett Cecil’s masterpiece outing. Cecil struck out nine Indians in seven shutout innings, but saw Downs blow the game in the top of the ninth, thanks in part to Overbay’s airmail toss to second base on Grady Sizmore’s attempted sac bunt. Downs didn’t do himself any favors a few batters later, grooving an 0-2 fastball to Victor Martinez, who doubled in a pair of runs to give Cleveland a 2-1 win.

On a positive note, Cecil looked great despite struggling with his control early on. Scott Rolen again proved why he’s the finest to ever play the game, homering in the seventh to give Toronto the lead and singling in the ninth, only to have Overbay pop up on the next pitch and Alex Rios chop to second to end the game. Vernon Wells was also back in the lineup for the Jays, and to no one’s surprise went 0-for-4. Welcome back!

The Jays and Indians are back at it tomorrow night, with phenomenon Ricky Romero on the hill against the infamous Carl Pavano.

  1. tracking back Jays throw another one away… tracking back Jays throw another one away…

  2. That was hardly a “masterpiece” by Cecil. He was dodging trouble like nobody’s business!!1 But the kid certainly deserved the win. Fucking Overbay.

  3. You’re right, his command was nowhere to be found early, but he settled in nicely and finished pretty strong. He’s been solid his last two times out, so that’s a positive…
