It just keeps getting uglier…

Ben Zobrist & friends, just laughing it up

So much for 27-14. So much for any kind of excitement over the last few months of the season. Oh well, it was nice well it lasted. The Jays dropped to .500 for the first time this season, losing to the Rays in walk-off fashion for the second consecutive night, 10-9. Unlike last night, Toronto was actually able to muster up some offense, but again (and not surprisingly) lost the battle of the bullpens. This time Jason Frasor and Scott Downs did the honour — Frasor gave up an infield single to Carl Crawford with one out in the ninth, watched him run wild on the bases, then left Downs to give up the winning hit to Ben Zobrist.

In what’s becoming a growing trend, Brian Tallet had another hellish start, coughing up eight runs in three-plus innings. Scott Kazmir wasn’t much better for the Rays, giving up seven runs and blowing a three-run seventh inning lead with the aid of Grant Balfour. All for nothing, though — the Jays left two on in the eigth and went in order in the ninth before letting the mighty Zobrist deliver the walk-off. By the way, what planet is Zobrist from anyway? In five games against Toronto over the past week-and-a-half, he’s 7-for-11 with seven walks.

It was nice to see the Jays generate some offense after last night’s snoozer, but it doesn’t make much of a difference when you can’t get anyone out. Adam Lind and Vernon Wells hit solo homers and Scott Rolen had three hits, extending his hit streak to 25 games, three short of tying the club record. The series wraps up tomorrow afternoon with the Jays in the same position they were last week against Tampa Bay — looking to salvage a game. Roy Halladay gets the ball, up against Rays’ rookie David Price.
