Washington continues playoff push with fourth straight win

We did it again? Get out!

We did it again? Get out!

I realize the Washington Nationals are professionals and all, but give me a break. I don’t even know what it takes to play for the Nationals. I think all you need is a face. That seems to be their big qualification. And there’s certainly no way you drop back-to-back extra inning games to them, as the Jays did the last two days, falling 5-3 in 12 innings on slugger Willie Harris’ walk-off homer last night.

The Jays wasted a home run from Vernon Wells, his first since 2004, as well as a strong start from Brett Cecil, who gave up three runs in seven innings in his first start since being recalled from Vegas on Wednesday. Toronto’s bullpen, depleted from Thursday’s slugfest in Philly and Friday’s 11-inning loss, needed to reach for starter Scott Richmond, who entered in the 11th and gave up Harris’ homer an inning later.

Well, losing the first two to Washington really blows after sweeping the Phillies, though I can’t say I’m surprised. Ricky Romero looks to avoid the sweep this afternoon when he faces Nationals rookie Shairon Martis, who finally broke into the bigs this year after starring in alongside Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna in A League of Their Own in 1992.
