Burnett a bum, according to the legendary Mike Lupica

Burnett, throwing a hissy fit after being pulled Tuesday night

I now know why Mike Lupica is George Costanza’s favourite writer — because he hates A.J. Burnett, just like every sensible baseball mind should! Burnett was almost as marvelous last night at Fenway as he was in his previous start against the Red Sox, lasting all of two-and-two-thirds in the Yankees’ 7-0 loss. That, after blowing a 6-0 lead in an eventual 16-11 loss in Boston on April 25. For the year, the $82 million man is 4-3 with a 4.89 ERA in 12 starts.

It’s early, and Burnett also struggled until about the midway point of last season, but it sure is nice to see him up to no good in New York. Care to try tipping your hat next time the fans in the Bronx boo you off the mound, A.J.?

For good measure, the Yankees lost to the Red Sox tonight as well, falling to 0-7 against their division rivals this season. With the win, Boston pulls into first in the AL East, with New York a game back and the playoff-bound Jays two back.
