Strasburg set to get rich, make the Nationals slightly less horrible

Stephen Strasburg, about to get rich, albeit as a Washington National

The 617-round MLB Draft starts today, and one thing is for sure: Stephen Strasburg will go first overall, sign an enormous contract and make the Washington Nationals slightly better in years to come. Even if he turns out to be the next Bryan Bullington or Brien Taylor, he’d still be good enough to crack that team’s rotation.

In case you’re not up on the Strasburg hype, here are the numbers: he’s a 20-year-old junior at San Diego State, 6’5″, throws a fastball that supposedly has been clocked as high as 103 miles per hour and throws a slider over 90, has Scott Boras as an agent and is reportedly looking to sign a contract worth around $50 million. Unlike some teams that have balked at first rounders looking for big money, the Nationals appear ready to give in to Strasburg and Boras’ demands.

As for the rest of the draft, I’d being lying if I said I knew much about any of the other players expected to go high. Toronto, which has five of the first 104 picks, drafts 20th overall. Any Upton brothers or hot-headed Youngs likely to be available then?

  1. Washington Nationals should be always competitive enough to keep pace with the others. I really like them; they’ve always been my favourite teams in MLB. Just read about them here:
