Tallet comes back to earth

Further evidence that I’m a little too excited about the Jays’ start (Case #1,209): Five days ago I was hyping Brian Tallet as The Big Unit (the 1996 model from the AL West Champion Seattle Mariners) and last night he coughed up 10 runs to the Kansas City Royals (the 2009 model, which I’ll admit is slightly more talented than the 1913-2008 versions).

So yeah, an 11-3 loss with Brian Burres set to go to the mound this afternoon — not good. I haven’t checked the weather, but I’m hoping for a monsoon in Kansas City starting…NOW! Anyway, it looked early on last night that Tallet might be able to gut out another quality start until he grooved an 0-2 fastball right down the middle to Billy Butler in the third and the rest was history.

On a postive yet inconsequential note, the Jays were the first team this season (and first in 43 innings dating back to last September) to score an earned run against Royals’ starter Zack Greinke. I have to admit, this kid is for real, and he still looks like he’s 14 years old! He kept the Jays off balance all night by throwing in that nasty 48 mph curveball.

Anyway, there goes Toronto’s hope of winning every series this season — they’ll have to win this afternoon to force a split before heading home to face the powerhouse Orioles this weekend.
