Romero shuts down A’s, draws ridiculous comparison

Ricky Romero

Ricky Romero, the next Johan Santana

Ricky Romero is the next Johan Santana, and you can quote the great Jack Cust on that.

“He’s got a bright future,” Cust said after this afternoon’s game. “He reminds me of Santana a little bit, his body and his mannerisms, the way he throws. Santana’s got those broad shoulders like he’s got. He’s similar, he’s got a similar arm slot, similar delivery. He’s going to be good.”

Alright, so even I could strike out Jack Cust, but if I were Romero, I’d still consider that a compliment. Romero was lights-out in his third career start today, tossing seven shutout innings in the Jays’ 1-0 win over Oakland, and officially stole the “the man” title from Lyle Overbay for the afternoon. Overbay did his part as well, though, driving in the only run of the game on a third inning single.

All in all, another fine win for the Jays.
