Rookie Romero gets the ball tonight
The Jays tip their second half schedule tonight at Rogers Centre, as the Red Sox come to town to start a three-game series, the opening set of a nine-game homestand. Cleveland and Tampa Bay are in to follow. If anyone cares anymore, that is.
In the next few days, I’m going to be scouring the American League, the National League and the Negro League for reasons to stay interested in baseball the rest of the way. Here’s one, for example: Joba Chamberlain sucks this season. Now that’s something that makes me happy!
Anyway, Ricky Romero (another reason to stay interested, since he’s on his way to the Rookie of the Year and becoming the best pitcher in the game) gets the ball tonight against Clay Buchholz, who’s up from Pawtucket for his first start of the season. Buchholz, of course, was the Boston hurler that pitched a no-hitter in 2007 (against Baltimore, albeit) and has been garbage since. Actually, he’s still a fine prospect — in 17 minor league starts in 2009, he’s 7-2 with a 2.36 ERA.

I can still vaguely remember when being a Blue Jays fan didn’t suck. I remember when the early excitement of a quick start was just a prelude to the thrill of a pennant race, instead of all you get for your dollar. With a looming trade of the best pitcher in baseball (what kind of a plan includes getting rid of the best pitcher in baseball?!?), I just sometimes feel like washing my hands of it all. If I just didn’t love baseball so much, it would so much easier…
Long live Ricky Romero!
