Lyle Overbay, summing up the last two months
Well, that went almost as horribly as a certain unforgettable road trip earlier this season. The Jays finished their 10-game tour of New York, Tampa Bay and Baltimore this afternoon, losing 4-2 to the Orioles to finish the trip 2-8. Thankfully, it’s All-Star Break time, which means we can all forget the Jays kept playing games after mid-May for a few days.
Mark Rzepcynski was solid in his second career start, scattering five hits and three runs in six innings, but left with Toronto down 3-0. The Jays scored a pair in the seventh, including one on a double by David Dellucci — his first hit in 20 at-bats since being called up ten days ago. Congrats! Overall, another dreadful offensive performance, but a rather fitting way to enter the break considering the way the team has played the last two months. Since starting the season 27-14, Toronto has hit the skids to the tune of 17-32, dropping their overall record to 44-46 — just three games ahead of last place Baltimore.
For a few days, though, we can forget the Jays exist. Not that I wish they didn’t. They’ve just made me pretty, pretty, pretty miserable the last little while.
Just to make your day even worse, “The Umps” got a mention in Sports Illustrated this week.
