Jays claw back to .500

Brett Cecil, getting back on track

Brett Cecil, getting back on track

After plenty of clawing and scratching, the Jays are finally back up to .500. Well, actually they were only below the mark for a day, but let’s just pretend they didn’t start the season 27-14 — it just hurts too much to think about. Toronto snapped a three-game losing streak tonight in Baltimore against the mighty Orioles, winning 2-0 behind six shutout innings from Brett Cecil.

Cecil, who grew up in Maryland, stuck out five and gave up four hits, winning his first major league game in almost two months. My boy Jesse “The American Dream” Carlson continued his quest to regain his swagger, retiring all four batters he faced while helping make way for Scott Downs, who picked up his first save since being activated from the disabled list Wednesday.

In a shocking tun of events, however, Scott Rolen failed to pick up a hit in his 26th consecutive game, meaning Joe DiMaggio’s legacy will live on. In perhaps an even more shocking turn, Alex Rios led Toronto’s offensive attack with a pair of doubles, scoring the Jays’ second run in the fifth on David Dellucci’s groundout. Dellucci, by the way, is hitless in his first 17 at-bats with Toronto. Think Brad Wilkerson can be willed out of retirement as a replacement?

A win in the opener is nice, and it gets better — unfazeable rookie Ricky Romero gets the ball tomorrow, and the Jays never lose when he pitches. Romero, 7-3 with a 2.96 ERA, has won his last four starts, though he had his roughest outing of the year at Camden Yards in May, giving up 11 hits and five runs in his first start after pulling a muscle while listening to rap music in April.
